****MY COMMITMENT FOR 2012****
I'm sure most of you have heard of the commotion that occurred involving Planned Parenthood and Susan G. Komen for the Cure (SGK) deciding not to fund them in the future and then after a media frenzy reversing the decision. Some may wonder about my commitment. Wonder not. I am still committed to walk in the 2012 3-Day for the Cure. I am still committed to finding a cure for breast cancer. This has ALWAYS been my goal. When I started walking in this event, I didn't do it for Planned Parenthood (PP). Hell, I didn't even know that PP was or wasn't funded by SGK and whether they are/were or not, doesn't matter to me.
No, what this has all come down to is politics...on BOTH sides I may add. My feeling is PP made a deliberate decision to announce the Komen decision for their own politcal reasons. As an accountant/finance person, when I started looking at the numbers the outrage I saw all around me was disproportionate to the numbers.. In reviewing Komen's 2010-11 tax returns, I found that only 16 PP were actually funded across the country for less than $700,000. (Please feel free to check the financial information yourself here. You will find audited financial statements, annual reports as well as tax returns.) I thought with the outrage, we were talking millions of dollars.
Is SGK a perfect organization? Of course not. If you find one, let me know. Just because the right series of events hasn't played out for another organization doesn't mean there aren't unsettling things going on with them. It just means they've been lucky. SGK's handling of this mess leaves a lot to be desired, of that I can agree. But what I have really learned as the world I knew was falling apart around me, and am left to wonder who will be left standing, is that my hatred for politics has grown exponentially. It shows people's ugly side. I have not, and will not, be brought down to this low level of hate, anger and insensitivity I've witnessed all around me. My emotional state has been very fragile of late, but my commitment to what is important to ME is solid.
Why do I continue to walk? Please read this blog. It is written by a young woman named Bridget, who was diagnosed with State IV breast cancer at only 21 years old in 2005. She is still waging the war against the demon in her body. Am I to give up on someone like Bridget for politics??? Hell no!!
I, of course, hope you will continue to be there for me. However, if you feel you can no longer support my work in the 3-Day for the Cure, I will respect your decision. I just ask you NOT to abandon the mission of finding a cure for cancer!!
It's quick and painless to donate online. Just click below to go directly to my official 3-Day fundraising page.
